My Two Cents : GH’s big mistake

By : J.Leonard

In the world of soaps, there are always a few things that the writers did and we all know they should not have. For example, the cloning story on Guiding Light. Turning Port Charles into Sunnydale on the soap opera Port Charles, cancelling Another World (oh shoot, that was not the writers). But I feel that biggest and more lasting mistake a soap has done is on General Hospital. The show has been killing off the Quartermaine’s one by one for the last few years. First was death of A.J Quartermaine. Then was the death of Alan, and after that Emily. The biggest mistake was killing off Alan. I don’t think the show ever truly recovered from that. Add to the fact that they written off Skye (who is thankfully returning), Ned, Dillion and also they killed of Justice!

You know what the saddest part of it is; there is no real way to fix that. I know that in soaps, being dead in not a certain fact, but this was pretty final.   I really enjoyed Stuart Damon’s portrayal of a ghost. He was literally driving Tracy crazy. Alan was a beloved character for decades on that show, was it really necessary for them to kill him off. He could of fell off a cliff with no body found, could have been in a coma. Could have lost his memory and moved away, I mean anything would have been better than him dying of a heart attack.

Although it brought great drama; it failed to bring a lasting story. It was done after a few months and it then came time to kill off Emily, only to have her appear has a ghost for months and months and a few short months after her last scene, have the actress return as Rebecca. The role would have been more believable if we would have had time to mourn and forget about Emily for a while. It was too soon and too fast. Although she had a big mouth, she was Emily. Rebecca never really made sense to me. Why bring her in so soon after the death of her twin sister. Her story never really made any sense and the twist and turns to try to make it make sense did not help. I just wish she would have told Lucky about Liz and Nikolas, which would have been great. Instead she left town with “Zander”. Again, that would have been more believable if Zander would have returned to take Emily to heaven, not bring Rebecca out of town.

So for all you Alan fans out there, here is a challenge. Write me a story (minimum 10 pages please) where Alan returns home. Make it believable. Make it powerful. I will then select the 10 most interesting entries and make readers vote for their favorite. I have no prize for the moment, but I might find something later one. So the contest begins February 26th 2010 and will run until the end of March 2010. I will read the material and select 10 of them by April 15th 2010 and the voting will begin from April 16th to 30th 2010. The winner will be announced on May 2nd 2010.

Be creative. Let’s have fun with this. Send it all to customercare@television-plus.com !
